The situation with widgets has been a bit strange home-screen widgets debuted on iPadOS a couple of years past, but this more robust update hit the iPhone first about a year ago and is only just making its way to the iPad with iPadOS 15. The other major addition to the home screen is free-form widget support. The iPad also gets something that the iPhone didn't: access to the app library from the dock, which is much more convenient than swiping to the last page on the home screen. When you try to delete an app on the home screen, you'll be asked whether you want to fully delete the app or just relegate it to the app library.įurther, you can now hide or show home screen pages, which plays nicely with Focus mode (see the iOS 15 review for details about that it works the same on the iPad) to give you more home screen customization than you've ever had before. The real advantage here is that the home screen is no longer the only place you can store apps, which means you can remove apps from the home screen while still keeping them accessible both via Spotlight search and by visiting the app library screen.

Of course the iPad can also launch Quick Notes by swiping up from the bottom right corner of the device screen, either with your finger or Apple Pencil. If you also use a Mac, you may know that fn+Q (globe+Q) also invokes Quick Note in macOS too (with Monterey and later), so this adds more consistency across the two platforms. If you’re hands are already on the keyboard, why not use a keyboard shortcut to activate Quick Note? Globe+Q is easy to press and instantly brings up Quick Note on the iPad with an external keyboard attached, as long as it’s running iPadOS 15 or newer. Globe+Q for Quick Notes, and away you go. So, if you like the Quick Notes feature on the iPad or Mac, and you use a physical keyboard with the iPad, you’ll be pleased to know you can use what amounts to the same keyboard shortcut to launch Quick Notes on iPad as you can on the Mac. Like any other note, Quick Notes can be shared or locked, and the other Notes app capabilities apply too of course. You can be at the Home Screen or within an app to activate Quick Notes with Globe+Q, where the Quick Note will instantly hover above the screen, ready to accept your typing, doodling, images, clipboard data, or whatever else you use notes for.

For example, if you’re using a Bluetooth keyboard that does not have the Globe key, then fn+Q will do the trick instead. The Globe key is in the bottom left corner of the iPad keyboard, it looks like a globe with latitude and longitude lines on it.įor other external iPad keyboards, fn+Q should bring up Quick Notes. The Globe+Q trick also works with all iPad models that are using a Smart Keyboard to summon a Quick Note.
